Meet Dr Tegan Buckingham
Special interest: sexual health including screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, erectile dysfunction, trans medicine including gender affirming hormonal therapy and contraception including being certificate to insert intra-uterine devices (IUDs). Other special interests include skin cancer medicine (skin checks, excisions) and aesthetic medicine procedures.
Dr Tegan is passionate about Women’s health and Sexual Health. She has advanced certification including being an authorised s100 prescribed for HIV and hepatitis B medications. She also prescribes medical therapy for hepatitis C, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and medical terminations of pregnancy (MTOPS).
What Is Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy?
Gender affirming hormone therapy helps align physical characteristics with gender identity to improve wellbeing and quality of life.
Treatment may include:
• Oestrogen therapy (for feminising hormone therapy)
• Testosterone therapy (for masculinising hormone therapy)
• Testosterone blockers (where appropriate)
The Assessment Process
- Initial Appointment
- Detailed medical history
- Discussion of goals and expectations
- Mental health assessment
- Discussion around fertility considerations
- Baseline blood testing (including hormone levels)
Patients are then referred to a Sexual Health Physician via telehealth for a second assessment as part of the informed consent process.
- Commencing Hormone Therapy
- Once assessment is complete and informed consent is obtained, hormone therapy may begin under medical supervision.
- Ongoing Monitoring
Follow-up appointments include:
- Review of physical and emotional changes
- Monitoring hormone levels via blood testing
- Dose adjustments as required
- Ongoing support
